Understanding self-regulation

Discover what self-regulation is, why it's crucial for children's development, and how it's a learned skill that evolves with support and practice. Learn how to foster this in children.

What is self-regulation?

"Self-regulation is the ability to recognize, manage, and modulate one's own emotions and emotional responses and behaviors." (Belongpartners, 2026). This set of skills may be the most important tool your students learn. In simple terms, it means pausing, thinking, and responding rather than reacting right away. It’s not something kids are born knowing how to do; it’s a skill they build over time with guidance, practice, and support from adults

Why self-regulation matters

Self-regulation is important because it shapes how well kids learn, get along with others, and handle everyday challenges. It also builds key life skills. It’s connected to resilience, independence, and emotional well-being. As they grow up, these skills help them manage stress, make better decisions, and handle responsibilities in school, work, and relationships.

Self-regulation in action

Imagine a child playing a board game who loses a turn. If they’re using good self-regulation, they might look disappointed, take a deep breath, and say something like, “That’s okay, I’ll try again next time.” Even though they feel upset, they stay in control and keep playing. A child who struggles with self-regulation might instead throw the game pieces or cry when they lose their turn.
